Here is my next project. I am in the middle of it now. It is basically a lot of plumbing . The object of the game is to get the rain water which is currently going down the drain to the storm drain which ends up in the Wissahickon creek . Its not a great set up. It pollutes the creek and overloads the sewage system.
So I buried this Sump basin below ground and will pipe the water from the drains to the basin. From there the water will be pumped over 150 feet to two 75 gallon rain barrels in the garden. Its a little tricky to do it properly. So I have been taking my time. However I should have an image up shortly of the working system.

If you can place the rain barrels next to the wall - why not look at the downspout diverters from www.aquabarrel.com? No electric to run just a piece of downspout
Aquabarrel..
If you take the time to read the blog you would notice that the garden is 150' from the building. So that is where the barrels will be. I did get a diverter from a garden center and found it wanting. Stay tuned for the solution.
Jonas: When I read your blog it was not clear to me why you felt it necessary to place the barrels 150' away - pumping to that point to store to pump out or gravity feed again seemed a bit redundant. I might suggest you follow the link to look at the unique, not found in your local hardware store, downspout diverters :-) Good Luck http://www.aquabarrel.com/product_downspout_diverter_y.php
